Jasper Jones anyone?

24 Apr

What I’m reading this week…

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey

Jasper Jones was nominated for a Michael Printz Award, so why haven’t I heard anyone really talking about it?? Maybe I’m in a hole or something, but this book is good. I mean really good. Think Mark Twain goes down under. It is definitely not for those sensitive to violence, (I hope I’m not giving too much away), because in the first pages Charlie Bent is called out of his bedroom window in the middle of the night by the shady Jasper Jones, who has a reputation for trouble. What happens next is terrifying and confusing. Charlie follows his intuition and decides to trust the seemingly unreliable Jasper.

Reckless by Cornelia Funke

This is a fairy-tale-like adventure which Funke fans will want to read.  The story tells of Jacob Reckless who, like his father before him, escapes into the Mirrorworld.  All is well until his younger brother, Will, follows him.  Will comes under the spell of the Dark Fairy and he slowly turns to stone and then to jade.  Such a creature is called a Goyl in Mirrorworld.  A Jade Goyl wields special power which attracts the interest of unsavory characters.  The search is on for an antidote to the spell.  Fairies, dwarves, man-eating sirens and unicorns populate the exciting story.  Looks like Funke has also left the door open for a sequel.
